Origin Story

Diane Lane. Andy Warhol. One T-Shirt.

In 1984, a young Diane Lane was photographed by Andy Warhol wearing a simple black tee with three words across the chest: nuke the valley.

The photograph is believed to have been taken around the production of Streets of Fire, the Walter Hill neo-noir that cemented Lane as one of her generation's most magnetic screen presences.

The shirt's origins remain murky. Rock memorabilia experts have traced it to what may have been a Frank Zappa promotional item — a sardonic jab at the San Fernando Valley's suburban sprawl, perfectly aligned with Zappa's irreverent wit.

Whatever its origin, the image endures: a collision of Warhol's lens, Lane's effortless cool, and a slogan that still hits decades later. Three words. No context needed.
